A framed photograph of the "South Side of Pepperell Square." Circa 1880s. Several business signs can be seen, inlcuding "Caskets, "Coffins," R.S. Boulter Harnesses," "Painted Oils & Glass," "Coal" and "Laundry." The businesses correspond with the 1891 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of Saco, Maine. The laundry business is listed as a "Chinese Laundry" in the map. According to the Biddeford & Saco Directory of 1890-91, Long Hop (in later directories as Hop Long) ran a laundry business at 23 1/2 Pepperell Square. He was a well known character in Saco - there are several newspaper articles about him during the 1880s/1890s.
