Description

Apron, unbleached cotton muslin bib-style embroidered by hand in bright rayon (?) and cotton threads and featuring an appliqued, embroidered head of a woman wearing a light blue cloche. The body of the apron is one piece with two rectangular ties attached to the top of the bib; the lower edge is shaped. The whole apron, including the ties, is edged with 3/8" white lace. All stitching with the exception of the embroidery is by machine. The main motif is the lady's head with the blue cloche, brown curls peeking out at the side and forehead, blue eyes, red mouth and nostrils, and black lashes and brows. The face is outlined in a golden brown; the hat with lavender thread. The blue eyes are created from cloth but outlined with black stitches and a blue french knot in the center of each eye. Polychrome stitched flowers are on the right side of the neck. A collar tied with a bow is created with black outline stitches and yellow french knots at the bottom of each rib. There is a floral spray embroidered at the upper right and at the bottom just right of center. While the bib is cut straight across at the top, the upper corners are colored with blue and set apart from the rest of the body by lavender outline stitches forming spandrels. The blue areas are colored, not appliqued like the hat. The composition is assymetrical reflecting a Japanese influence. A minimum of four embroidery stitches were used: outline, french know, satin?, and lazy daisy stitch?.
