Thirty-first volume of the diary of Benjamin Simpson of Saco, 1781-1849. This volume covers the period February 27, 1842 through September 15, 1846. It is handwritten in ink on rag paper with a handsewn binding; it is now housed in a modern paper cover. Most of the entries are a single line. The date is listed at the top of each page, with individual entries (most without dates) listed below. Simpson noted his major task of the day and the weather.
Simpson began the year 1842 at home reading. In late May Simpson reported that he had done more planting in that year than he had in the last two years. He still attended religious meetings regularly, but otherwise mostly remained at home. Many days he listed his daily activity as reading. He did continue to perform minor farm chores, such as shelling beans. Simpson also continued to report on the weather on a daily basis. On Monday, May 1, 1843, he noted "a very great freshet on Saco river. Many mills & bridges gone."Dimensions
