Glass plate negative photo of Captain Seth Spring's Tavern (also known as Lafayette House) at 14 Elm Street. Towards the end of the 19th century, the building was converted into a tenement (as shown here). It was later restored into the colonial style for the offices of Deering Lumber Co.
Context
Marquis de Lafayette supposedly stopped here in June 23, 1825 and was entertained by Captain Spring.
