After Gibeon's father passed away in 1848, his mother Lucy raised her three boys on her own for a number of years, finally remarrying sometime during the 1850s. Her second husband was William Foss, whose own first wife, Ruth, had died in 1850. His home was located in Hollis, across the Saco River from Salmon Falls Village. By 1860, all of Lucy's children were living on their own and she was helping raise William's two children, Jane and James. Before he married, Gibeon stopped by his mother's house on an almost daily basis to visit or take a meal.
