Like many landscape painters in mid-19th-century New England, Bradbury included sketching out-of-doors as an important part of his artistic process. Summer and autumn would often find him taking painting trips along the Saco River with fellow Maine artist Harrison Bird Brown and others. Sketchbooks like these provided the raw material for oil paintings created later in the studio.
