Scope and Content

Volume 1 of the travel diaries of Ethelinda Deering Frey, Saco, Maine June 16, 1910 to Cologne, Germany, August 7, 1910

Context

+ In June 1910, Ethelinda Frey traveled to Europe with her mother, Luella Leavitt Frey, her older sister Helen Frey, and family friend Katharine Deering. Helen and Katherine had just graduated from Thornton Academy. The group left for Europe immediately after graduation. Ethelinda was sixteen and had just completed her sophomore year at Thornton Academy. They first traveled by train from Portland to Montreal, where they boarded a steamer bound for Liverpool, England. Once in England, they traveled through the Lake District for a few days, before heading north to Scotland, stopping off at Carlisle Castle on the way. The group went to Stirling Castle and spent several days in Edinburgh. Heading south to York, they also visited Melrose Abbey. Other stops in England included Stratford-on-Avon, Oxford, London, and Canterbury. They departed by boat for Ostend on August 1, where they boarded a train for Brussels. Once on the continent, they also visited the Waterloo Battlefield, before spending some time in Amsterdam. The volume ends with their arrival in Cologne, Germany in early August. Ethelinda kept a daily account of their travels, noting the hotels they stayed in, the locations they traveled, etc. She often glued postcards of the sites they visited into her diary. This volume also includes botanical specimens inserted between pp. 137-138 and pp. 187-188. See the entries for 2021.4.2-8 for the other volumes in the series.
