Scope and Content

Volume 8 of the travel diaries of Ethelinda Deering Frey, Florence, Italy, March 29, 1911 to Rome, April 18, 1911

Context

Most of this volume covers the group's time in Florence, where they remained through April 11, 1911, before traveling on to Rome. All of the entries in this volume were written well after the fact; notes in the margins indicate the day on which they were actually written. The first entry, for March 29, was written on July 30, 1911--about seven weeks after the group returned from Europe. The group sailed from Naples for Boston on the S.S. Romanic; they arrived on June 6, 1911. The last entry in the diary written in 1911 was for April 3, 1911, recorded on July 14. The remainder were all written in July and August, 1913. The final entry in the volume is for April 18, written on August 31, 1913. The last fourteen pages of the book are blank, so there are no entries for the dates April 19 through the end of their travels in the spring or early part of the summer. There is a botanic specimen between pp. 28-19. Of the many postcards in this volume, almost all of them are artworks they saw rather than sites they visited.
