Volume 4 of the travel diaries of Ethelinda Deering Frey, Territet, Switzerland, November 14 to Munich, Germany, December 29, 1910Context
Ethelinda, Helen, and Katharine left the Institute des Essarts until mid-December. They stayed in Territet until after the Christmas holidays, when they traveled by train to Munich. During their remaining time in Switzerland, they made several trips to historic and natural sites in the area, including the Castle of Chillon and Champery. While Ethelinda seemed to enjoy much of the Christmas dinner and celebrations, being the daughter of a conservative American minister, she was appalled that there was dancing on Christmas day--especially since the holiday fell on a Sunday, making it doubly offensive. She was quite disappointed that an American participated in the dancing, although all of the English (even the clergymen) also did so. They left Territet the day after Christmas and arrived in Munich the next day. The volume closes with a very detailed account of the group's trip to the opera to hear Richard Wagner's "Tannhauser."Dimensions
