Scope and Content

Volume 5 of the travel diaries of Ethelinda Deering Frey, Munich, Germany, December 30, 1910 to Dresden, Germany, January 15, 1911

Context

Ethelinda, Helen, Katharine and Luella occupied their time in Munich with visits to the major historic sites and art museums. On January 2, they moved on to Dresden, where Luella enrolled the younger women in another boarding school. This establishment was run by Frau Paula Schorke, a former governess to Cornelius Vanderbilt's children. As in Territet, Luella Frey took rooms in an adjacent building to the school. The other students in the school were from Bulgaria, Germany, and England. Ethelinda had them sign their names on p. 24 of her diary. Luella's primary goal in enrolling the girls in the school seems to have been for them to learn, or improve, their understanding of German, as well as continuing to work on their French. While in Dresden, they went to the opera several times and Ethelinda always included a detailed account of the experience. The operas included "Der Freischutz" by Karl Weber, "Tales of Hoffman" by Jacques Offenbach, "The Flying Dutchman" by Robert Wagner. The last entry in this volume is January 15, 1911. The remainder of the book is blank. Volume 6 begins on February 27, so there is a gap of approximately six weeks in Ethelinda's travel account. It appears that during this period, the three girls were engaged in their schooling. Volume 6 begins with the group preparing to leave Dresden.
