Volume 7 of the travel diaries of Ethelinda Deering Frey, Prague, March 8, 1911 to Florence, Italy, March 29, 1911Context
On March 12, the group moved on to Italy and arrived in Venice the following day. As always, Ethelinda wrote about their journeys to various churches and museums in great detail, with much description as to the various art works they saw. One of the highlights of their time in Venice was a moonlight gondola ride they took their last night in the city. On March 18, the group traveled to Milan, passing through Padua and Vernonica. They stopped briefly in Genoa. On March 24, they arrived in Florence. There are many postcards in this volume, both of the historic sites as well as a sampling of the artworks they viewed. Some of the cards have handwritten notes on the back, presumably to help jog Ethelinda's memory when she wrote her diary entries. The March 19 entry is the last in the volume that does not include a note in the margin with another later date, indicating when the entry was actually recorded. At the end of the entry for March 20, Ethelinda wrote: "I might say that I am writting this day from my notes April 29th. Some call it hopeless but not I!" The remaining entries in the volume were mostly recorded in mid-May, about six weeks after the actual dates. The last date entry was written on July 2, 1911.Dimensions
