In October 1858, Bradbury exhibited a hay painting scene at the York County Cattle Show and Fair. The Biddeford Weekly Gazette, published a report of the fair on October 20, which included the following description: No. 214 Landscape in oil, gives promise, with a little more study of nature and of good paintings, of a fine landscape painter before many years. We understand that the Artist is Mr. Bradbury of Buxton or Hollis. Although defective in pictorial effect, the feeling of the picture was good and natural. A rising thunder cloud warns the haymakers, and the last load of hay is hurrying off the field. But we should suggest that the mowed field looks in color, like one in early spring, when the grass is newly starting. When Mr. Bradbury learns what one-two-three-four means he will then begin to paint well, for he evidently has the natural ability. Should he think it worth while to find out who writes this criticism and call upon us we will cheerfully tell him what we mean by the above italicized words.
