Description

Large oil painting in teakwood frame of the Staples family of Old Orchard Beach. The painting was done by an artist in Hong Kong, circa 1861, and was based on tintype(s) or daguerreotype(s) of the family. From left to right: Mary Elizabeth Staples (Marston) (1832-1892), Ebenezer Cole Staples (1800-1895), Henry "Harry" William Staples (1838-1916), Josephine Staples (1840-1937), Franklin Gilpatric Staples (1836-1924), Charles Fayette Staples (1842-1923), Helena Addie Staples (1845-1909), Eliza (Buker) Staples (1804-1887). Starting with the Ye Olde Staples Inn, the Staples family grew their hotel business into the 300-room Old Orchard House and other shoreline establishments such as the Seashore House. Ebenezer Staples is considered to be the pioneer of the resort industry in Old Orchard Beach.
