Gibeon and Jeannie Bradbury's only child was born in 1878, eighteen years after their marriage. Named after his father, Gibeon, Sr. always called him "Lad." Bradbury often referred to Lad in his diaries and the two took many walks in the woods together. On July 8, 1881, he reported that while he was cleaning out the well the "Boy came out and said he wanted to 'love' me; so I had to stop, and let him hug a while."
