Description

Glass lantern slide photograph of the aftermath of the Main Street, Saco, fire on December 9, 1912 which consumed the Saco House hotel and the Thornton Block, which included a fish market and Atkinson's Furniture. The fire apparently started in the shipping/packing area at the back of the furniture store. The remains of "Uwanta Lunch" (151 Main Street) owned by Silas Gordon can be seen. Uwanta Lunch was at the end of the Thornton Block. The remains of the Saco House (the front section of the hotel) was later rebuilt with a flat roof as the new Atkinson's Furniture Company which occupied the building for over 75 years. The ruins of the Thornton Block was cleared and remained an open lot for many years until the US Post Office was built in 1923.
