The winged Pepperell Griffin was adopted by the Pepperell Manufacturing Company as its symbol in 1851, the year after it was founded in Biddeford, Maine. A composite mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle, the griffin was used as a symbol and a decorative motif as far back as ancient times.
