Blank book with sewn binding. The cover has a an engraving of a young man astride a horse, jumping over a fence. Handwritten at the top in ink: Lydia E. Tucker's / Com. Wrtg. Book / Born Nov 16, 1809 / Dec 16, 1822." Various penmanship exercises are written inside. Lydia used this book for her writing lessons while attending Thornton Academy.

As noted on the front of the book Lydia E. Tucker was born on November 26, 1809. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Hannah Tucker and the older sister of sampler maker Hannah Marcia Tucker. She died young, on December 1, 1828 at the age of nineteen. Lydia used this book for her writing lessons while attending Thornton Academy.
