Vellux blankets were developed by WestPoint Pepperell employee Francis Spencer in 1966. The blanket name come from “vel” for velvet and “lux” from Latin for light. They are made from a non-woven fabric that is light-weight yet insulates well. The blanket became a mainstay for the company and remained in production in Biddeford until 2009.
