Description

Glass plate negative photo of 42 Beach Street, Saco, ME. Trolley tracks are visible on the street. Formerly known as The Sarah Fairfield Hamilton Memorial Building, named in honor of the founder of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union in Saco in 1911. City records show that the house was originally built in 1854. Some publications have erroneously called the house Hamilton's childhood home. The Fairfield homestead was actually further down Beach Street near Laurel Hill Cemetery. Also, this building is often confused with "Hamilton Hall" on Storer Street, which was used as a gym/athletic center for Thornton Academy.
