Description

Photograph of workers in front of slashers in a dressing room of the Laconia Division of the Pepperell Manufacturing Company. The warp beams were unwound behind the slasher, the yarn was passed through a trough of boiling starch, then was dried on huge steam-filled cylinders, and finally was wound on the loom beam at the front. (See 2022.59.47 and 2022.59.44 for a view of the slashers from the rear.) This collection of Laconia Mills photos was discovered in the attic of 116 North Street in Saco, ME by Arthur Morrow. City records show that Ernest L. Morrill, agent of the Pepperell Manufacturing Company from 1910 to 1924, lived at the house.
