Description

Unfinished silk and velvet crazy quilt composed of 9 x 9" squares. Some of the squares are backstitched together while others are merely basted to each other. While the pieces within the squares have decorative embroidery covering the interior joints, there is no decorative stitching covering the seams of the squares to each other. One patch includes the embroidered initials "A F M". There are several patches with printed pictures, including a portrait of a young girl, a bull, and several partial prints that are difficult to identify. There are also patches with pattern woven scenes, including a baby carriage with three infants and a plum pudding surrounded by four elves. One square has several pieces of decorative trim or gimp applied along the interior seams. Each square is individually backed with either a cotton sheeting or a coarser muslin. Two of the squares have blue printed text; they may be reused flour bags or fabric bale covers.
