Description

Wholecloth quilt of red wool, with wool batting, and a natural colored wool backing. Stitched with red thread. At the center is a stylized rose with ten "petals" within a square. This central medallion is bordered on all four sides with a narrow chain of intersecting loops. Within the chains are concentric circles, a variety of blocks, some with leaves and others of varying patterns. The entire quilt is very densely stitched making it difficult to sort out specific elements. Each side has a border consisting of an arch with the same type of narrow chain border and a smaller arch within. Rays extend from the smaller arch to the bands with the chain. Diagonal infill stitches within the panels divided by the rays make the composition reminiscent of a window. Self-bound with two rows of stitching. Loom width of the red fabric retains a sharp crease, which is darker in color. No evidence of glazing.

Context
