Description

Hand-stitched crazy quilt made of velvet and silk composed of 11" squares. Each corner of the squares has a small ribbon bow that is tied through the surface embroidery thread. There are two pieces with painted embellished initials: "C M D [or E M D]" and W A D". The quilt has decorative embroidery, painted designs, and many appliqued areas, some of which appear to be ladies' floral millinery trimmings. The materials used include several different faux fur fabrics, chenille threads, metallic threads, and a square of metallic lace at the center of the quilt. There are several areas that have ribbon work and other types of three dimensional appliqued flowers. There are also many animals represented on the quilt: a spiderweb, horse, camel, frog, rabbit, cat, two owls, and a chicken. Also included is a good luck horseshoe, a common motif for crazy quilts. The quilt has a 4" wide deep red velvet border and a 3" silk ruffle printed in red and gold with a leaf and berry pattern with a woven stripe. The backing of the quilt is a purple cotton sateen. The ruffle and backing fabric are of a later date that the quilt itself.
