This box belonged to Amos Chase (1718-1818), one of the earliest settlers of Saco. A lumberman and farmer, he was prominent in religious and civic affairs. He was also the first Deacon of the First Congregational Church. During the Revolutionary War he served on the town’s first Committee of Correspondence in 1774 and 1776, which was responsible for communicating with other colonies and coordinating revolutionary activities. In 1774, he also served on the Committee of Inspection, which enforced the Continental Association’s trade boycotts against British goods. Chase might have stored documents relating to his committee activities in such a box.
