Portrait of Augustus Peabody, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1843-45. Augustus Peabody, born Asa Peabody in Andover in May 1779 (he legally changed his given name to Augustus in 1815), was a Harvard Law-trained attorney who practiced in Cambridge for roughly forty years. A member of Franklin Lodge in Dartmouth, New Hampshire, as well as St. Paul Lodge in Groton and Amicable Lodge in Cambridge, he served as District Deputy Grand Master and Senior Grand Warden before his election as Grand Master, during which he restored eighteen lodge charters. He died October 2, 1850, in Roxbury.
