Visual depictions of Charles A. Welch, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1878-80. Charles Alfred Welch, born January 30, 1815, in Boston, was a Harvard-educated attorney (1833) in a law partnership with Edward D. Sohier that lasted fifty years, from 1838 to 1888. A member of Monitor Lodge in Waltham, where he rose to Worshipful Master (1868–69), he served as District Deputy Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master before his election as Grand Master, sat on the Grand Lodge's Board of Directors for over three decades, and received an honorary 33rd degree in 1876; as Grand Master he arranged for renewal of the tax that retired the Fraternity's property debt. He died January 23, 1908, in Cohasset.
