Visual depictions of Claude L. Allen, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1935-37. Claude L. Allen was born January 11, 1878, in South Thomaston, Maine, and was made a Master Mason in Wyoming Lodge in 1904, serving as its Worshipful Master in 1917. He served as District Deputy Grand Master of the Malden 7th District (1919-20) and Deputy Grand Master (1921) before his election as Grand Master in 1935. A graduate of Boston English High School and Boston University Law School (1900), he practiced law in Boston for six decades, heading the firms Allen and Barnes and later Allen and Redding, and served as counsel for the Grand Lodge; he also served as a Melrose alderman, city solicitor, and state senator, and as president of Melrose Hospital and the Melrose National Bank and Trust Company. He received the Scottish Rite 33rd degree in 1936 and served as the Supreme Council's Deputy for Massachusetts from 1948 to 1960, holding an honorary Doctor of Jurisprudence from Suffolk University (1958). Allen died March 21, 1961, in Willemstad, Curacao.
