Vose was born December 27, 1911, in Edgartown, Massachusetts, and became a Master Mason in 1933, serving as Worshipful Master of Columbian Lodge in Boston in 1947; he was also affiliated with Oriental Lodge in Edgartown through family ties. He served as Junior Grand Steward (1950), District Deputy Grand Master of the Boston 1st District (1962), and Deputy Grand Master (1963) before his election as the 74th Grand Master in 1972. He served as president of the Edgartown National Bank for fifty-one years beginning in 1957, and his earlier career included the study of theatre arts, work in advertising, and sales for the Curtis Publishing Company. He was deeply active in York and Scottish Rite Masonry, serving as Eminent Commander of St. Bernard Commandery (1964), Commander-in-Chief of the Massachusetts Consistory (1958-61), Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar (1982), and Potentate of Aleppo Shrine (1976), receiving the honorary 33rd degree in 1960. A licensed pilot who flew until age 83 and a competitive sailor into his nineties, Vose died October 1, 2008, in his native Edgartown at the age of 96.
