Holmes was born January 3, 1853, in North Abington, Massachusetts, and was initiated into Revere Lodge in Boston in 1875, later serving as its Worshipful Master in 1886-87. He served as Deputy Grand Master in 1894 and on the Grand Lodge Board of Directors from 1887 until his death in 1924, and he received the 33rd degree in September 1896, the same year he was elected Grand Master. A wholesale boot and shoe merchant, he was the first president of both the Shoe Wholesalers Association of New England and its national counterpart, and he served as vice president and director of the John Hancock Life Insurance Company. He was also an avid big-game hunter and lecturer. Holmes died December 28, 1924, in Brookline, Massachusetts.
