Visual depictions of Francis J. Oliver, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1817-19. Francis Johonnot Oliver, born October 10, 1777, was a Harvard graduate (1795) and member of St. John's Lodge in Boston, where he was raised in 1800 and served as Worshipful Master from 1806 to 1808 before rising through Junior and Senior Grand Warden and Deputy Grand Master to the Grand East. A shipping and insurance businessman who co-founded and led American Insurance Company for eighteen years, he laid the cornerstone of Massachusetts General Hospital during his term as Grand Master and is remembered as a founder of East Boston. He died August 21, 1858, having retired to Middletown, Connecticut.
