Henry Price, born around 1697 in London, is regarded as the first Provincial Grand Master of New England and is often called the "Founder of Duly Constituted Masonry in America." A member of Lodge No. 75 in London before emigrating, Price received his appointment as Provincial Grand Master in 1733, with his jurisdiction extended to cover all of North America the following year; under his authority St. John's Lodge in Boston was constituted on August 31, 1733, as the first regular Lodge in America. Outside the Craft he worked as a tailor, shopkeeper, and landowner, and later represented his district in the Massachusetts Provincial Legislature (1764–65). He married three times over his long life and died on May 20, 1780, in an accident while chopping wood at his home in Townsend, Massachusetts.
