Visual depictions of Herbert W. Dean, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1929-31. Herbert W. Dean was born October 7, 1871, in Cheshire, Massachusetts, and was raised in Upton Lodge there in 1897, serving as its Master in 1902-03. He was District Deputy Grand Master of the 15th District (1911-12) and Senior Grand Warden from 1921 to 1928 before his election as Grand Master in 1929, receiving the honorary 33rd degree in September 1930. A civil engineer who worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad and the U.S. Geodetic Surveys before returning to Cheshire, he served as president of the Berkshire Lime Manufacturing Company and treasurer of the Cheshire White Quartz Company, founded by his grandfather; he was also active in York Rite Masonry, serving as High Priest of Corinthian Chapter and later Grand King. As Grand Master, Dean undertook a remarkable five-month, roughly 25,000-mile world tour from March to August 1930, visiting lodges across Europe, the Middle East, India, and Asia, including London, Cairo, Bombay, Rangoon, Shanghai, Peking, and Tientsin, and presenting Henry Price Medals abroad. He died March 30, 1944, in his native Cheshire.
