Philip Berquist was born December 11, 1926, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was raised in Dalhousie Lodge in Newtonville in 1948, serving as its Master in 1959-60; he was also a charter member of The Masters Lodge, Newtonville, in 1983, serving as its Master in 1986. He served as Grand Tyler (1968-69), District Deputy Grand Master of the Waltham 5th District (1970-71), and Deputy Grand Master (1973) before his election as Grand Master in 1981, later serving as Grand Treasurer (1991-93). Educated at Colby College (B.A. 1949) and Tufts University (M.A. in Education), he taught English at Bridgton Academy in Maine before entering municipal government as Assistant City Clerk and Chairman of the Board of Assessors in Newton and Waltham, and he later ran an independent real-estate appraisal practice. A U.S. Navy medic attached to the Marine Corps in both World War II and Korea, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Berquist died October 24, 2001, in Boston.
