Jeremy Gridley, born March 10, 1701, led the Grand Lodge for a dozen years and chartered twenty-two lodges during his tenure as Provincial Grand Master, a member of the First Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Boston (the ancestor of today's St. John's Lodge). Outside Freemasonry he was one of colonial Boston's most consequential lawyers, known as the "Father of the Boston Bar" and serving as Attorney-General of Massachusetts; a 1725 Harvard graduate, he trained a generation of prominent attorneys including James Otis, Samuel Quincy, and a young John Adams, and in 1731 he founded the newspaper the Rehearsal. He died on September 10, 1767, and is sometimes referred to in historical sources as "Jeremiah Gridley."
