Description

Visual depictions of John Abbot, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1824-26; 1834. John Abbot, born in 1776 in Westford, was a member of St. Paul Lodge in Groton (now Ayer), serving three terms as Worshipful Master before rising through Junior and Senior Grand Warden, Grand High Priest, and Deputy Grand Master to two separate terms as Grand Master. A Harvard graduate (1798) and attorney who also taught in Westford, he served in the Massachusetts State Senate and, as Grand Master, presided at the laying of the Bunker Hill Monument cornerstone alongside the Marquis de Lafayette in 1825. He is remembered for leading Massachusetts Freemasonry through the Anti-Masonic crisis, at one point surrendering the Grand Lodge's charter rather than yield to legislative pressure, and chartered seventeen lodges over his terms. He died April 30, 1854.
