John Albert Blake was born April 15, 1843, and was initiated into Amity Lodge in Danvers in 1866, serving as its Worshipful Master in 1877-78. A Civil War Navy veteran and shoe manufacturer, he represented his district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1878 before rising through a remarkable series of Masonic offices: Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch (1891-93), Grand Master of the Council of Royal and Select Masters (1894-96), Grand Master of the Grand Lodge (1906-08), Grand Commander of the Massachusetts/Rhode Island Commandery (1910), and General Grand Master of the General Grand Council of the United States (1912-15). He received the honorary 33rd degree in 1900. As Grand Master he established the Masonic Home at Charlton, Massachusetts, a cause he championed throughout his term and continued to administer until his death on November 27, 1926.Relationships
