Visual depictions of John Dixwell, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1821-23. John Dixwell, born Samuel Hunt on January 6, 1777, adopted the name of his maternal grandfather and rose through St. John's Lodge in Boston — Worshipful Master 1813–16, District Deputy Grand Master 1811–12, Deputy Grand Master 1817–18 — before his election as Grand Master. Educated at Boston Latin and Harvard, he trained in medicine under Dr. John Warren and became a practicing physician, and helped found the Boston Light Infantry alongside John Adams; as Grand Master he authorized nine new lodge charters, including one in Puerto Rico. He died November 4, 1834.
