Visual depictions of John Rowe, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1768-87.
John Rowe, born November 27, 1715, in Exeter, England, rose through the Grand Lodge's ranks — Grand Treasurer, Junior and then Senior Grand Warden, and Deputy Grand Master from 1763 — before serving as Provincial Grand Master for nearly two decades, during which he established lodges in Falmouth (Maine), Wallingford (Connecticut), and Nantucket, and in 1776 authorized American Union Lodge No. 1, the first traveling military lodge of the Continental Army. Initiated into St. John's Lodge in July 1740 and later raised in the Masters' Lodge, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1751, Rowe was a Boston merchant who owned his own fleet of ships and a conservative Whig who chose to remain in Boston through the British occupation. He died on February 17, 1787.Relationships
