Visual depictions of John Soley, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1827-29. John Soley, born February 1, 1765, in Charlestown, was a member of King Solomon's Lodge there, rising through Junior and Senior Grand Warden, Deputy Grand Master (1809–10), and Grand Secretary (1811–19) before his election as Grand Master. A prosperous Charlestown shipping merchant and Justice of the Peace who also served in the state legislature, he dedicated the first monument on Bunker Hill in 1794 and, decades later, assisted at the 1845 dedication of the Bunker Hill Monument itself; he was a strong champion of the Grand Charity Fund. He died April 6, 1851, in Bristol, Rhode Island.
