Joseph Earl Perry was born December 30, 1884, in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, and joined Mountain Lodge there in 1909, later affiliating with Belmont Lodge in 1919 and serving as its Worshipful Master in 1929. He served as District Deputy Grand Master of the Brighton Fifth District (1933-34), Deputy Grand Master (1936), and Judge Advocate (1937) before his election as Grand Master in 1938. Educated at Williams College (1906), Harvard Law School (1909), and Boston University (1922), he practiced law in Boston, served as Massachusetts Income Tax Assessor and State Bank Commissioner, and was president of Newton Savings Bank for fifteen years. He remained on the Grand Lodge Board of Directors from 1941 to 1972, served as Grand Representative of South Carolina (1938-67) and Ireland (1967-83), received the honorary 33rd degree in 1939, and authored The Masonic Way of Life (1968). Perry died November 3, 1983, in his native Shelburne Falls.Relationships
