Visual depictions of Joseph Warren, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1769-75.
Joseph Warren, born June 11, 1741, in Roxbury, Massachusetts, became Provincial Grand Master in December 1769 under a commission from the Earl of Dalhousie and was elevated in 1773, by commission from the Earl of Dumfries, to Grand Master of Masons for the Continent of America — the highest Masonic authority in the colonies at the time — having come up through the Lodge of St. Andrew in Boston. A Harvard-educated physician (class of 1759), he sat on the Boston Committee of Safety, served as President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, and authored the Suffolk Resolves; on the night of April 18, 1775, he dispatched Paul Revere and William Dawes to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock of the approaching British troops. Warren was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill (Breed's Hill) on June 17, 1775, at age thirty-four, his body later identified by an artificial tooth that had been made for him by fellow Mason Paul Revere.Relationships
