Moses Michael Hays, born in 1739 in Lisbon, Portugal, served as Master of the Massachusetts Lodge from 1782 to 1785 and as Junior Grand Warden in 1785 before being elected Grand Master, a tenure during which he helped bring about the 1792 union of Massachusetts's two competing Grand Lodges. An insurance underwriter by profession, he was Sephardic Jewish, making him the only Brother of that faith to hold prominent Grand Lodge office during this era. He died in Boston on May 9, 1805.Relationships
