Richard Briggs was born August 23, 1829, in Dedham, Massachusetts, and became a member of Columbian Lodge, serving as a charter member of both Revere Lodge, where he was Worshipful Master in 1862-63, and the Lodge of Eleusis, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1867. He rose through Grand Lodge office as Junior Grand Warden in 1870 and Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Massachusetts from 1865 to 1867 before his election as Grand Master in 1893. For about fifty years he ran a Boston crockery business, and as Grand Master his first official act was to propose a Masonic Home for the poor, needy, and widows of the fraternity. Briggs died in office on July 29, 1893, the first Massachusetts Grand Master to do so since 1787.
