Stewart was born in 1943 in Burlington, Vermont, and was raised in Athelstan Lodge in Worcester in 1966, serving as its Master in 1974-75 before it merged into Guiding Lights Lodge in 2003; he also served as Master of The Masters Lodge in Needham (1995-96), Winslow Lewis Lodge in Boston (1997-99), and Rose of Sharon Lodge in Charlton (2007-08), with honorary memberships in Mount Lebanon, Norumbega Fraternity, Mount Holyoke, The Independence, and The Scouters' lodges. He rose through a long series of Grand Lodge offices, including Junior Grand Deacon (1982), Grand Tyler (1985-86), Grand Sword Bearer (1987-89), Grand Pursuivant (1990), Deputy Grand Master (1991), and Grand Marshal (2007-10), before his election as Grand Master in 2011. A salesman with the Charles P. Lauman Company from 1963, he purchased the company outright in 1975, and he served eight years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. He has served as Grand Representative to Denmark since 1986 and is a vintage-car enthusiast.
