Samuel Crocker Lawrence, born November 22, 1832, in Medford, was a Civil War colonel and brigadier general who went on to become Medford's first Mayor (1893–94). Raised in Hiram Lodge in 1854 and a charter member and Worshipful Master of Mount Hermon Lodge (1862–65), he served as Senior Grand Warden and sat on the Grand Lodge's Board of Directors for over forty years, from 1869 until his death, before and after his election as Grand Master; he later served as Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite (1909–10). As Grand Master he personally financed paying off roughly $400,000 of the Masonic Temple's debt. He died September 24, 1911, in Medford.
