Visual depictions of Samuel Dunn, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1800-02.
Samuel Dunn, born July 19, 1747 (some sources give 1743 or 1753), served for years as Worshipful Master of St. John's Lodge and as Deputy Grand Master from 1797 to 1799, in which role he created the district deputy grand master system still used by the Grand Lodge today. A shipmaster and shipwright by trade, he later served as a Boston town assessor and as a representative to the General Court (1811–13); he also secured the lock of George Washington's hair from Martha Washington and commissioned Paul Revere to craft the golden urn that holds it. In 1799 he married Sarah Cutler, daughter of former Grand Master John Cutler. He died on November 28, 1815.Relationships
