Visual depictions of Thomas S. Roy, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1951-53. Thomas S. Roy was born August 31, 1884, in Newcastle, New Brunswick, and was raised in King Solomon Lodge in Digby, Nova Scotia, in 1912, later affiliating with Dalhousie Lodge in Newtonville, Paul Revere Lodge in Brockton, and, from 1929, Montacute Lodge in Worcester, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1935-36. He was District Deputy Grand Master (1942) and Deputy Grand Master (1943) before his election as Grand Master in 1951. An ordained Baptist minister, he served as pastor of Worcester's First Baptist Church from 1929 to 1951 and taught public speaking at Andover Newton Theological School, and he sat on the boards of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester Academy, and Newton Theological Institution. He received the Scottish Rite 33rd degree in 1945, authored two books on Freemasonry, and held honorary doctorates from Acadia University, Colby College, Clark University, and WPI. Roy died March 21, 1980, in Worcester, Massachusetts.
