Visual depictions of William S. Gardner, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1869-71. William Sewall Gardner, born October 1, 1827, in Hallowell, Maine, was a lawyer who became a Superior Court Justice in 1875 and later rose to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 1885. A member of Ancient York Lodge and Kilwinning Lodge in Lowell, where he served as Worshipful Master (1856–57), he was Grand Marshal, District Deputy Grand Master, and Senior Grand Warden before his election as Grand Master, and separately served as Most Eminent Grand Master of the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar of the United States (1868–71). He died April 4, 1888, in Newton.
