Visual depictions of William D Coolidge, Grand Master of Massachusetts, 1861-62. William Dawes Coolidge, born February 15, 1808, in Boston, was a wool merchant and leather trader who served in the Massachusetts legislature. Raised in Columbian Lodge in 1842 and its Worshipful Master in 1852–53, he progressed through Grand Sword Bearer, Junior Grand Steward, Grand Marshal, District Deputy Grand Master, and Junior Grand Warden before his election as Grand Master, during which he chartered ten Army Lodges to serve Massachusetts soldiers in the Civil War. He died September 12, 1885, in Newton Centre.
