His name literally translates to, “Imperial Brother-In-Law Cao '', Cao is said to be the brother of a 10th Century Song Empress as well as uncle to the Song Emperor. He is always represented as the best dressed of the immortals. He carries a jade tablet that had the ability to purify the air. He also was attributed with castanets thought to be connected to his social and political status. He was the patron deity of actors.
